We are in an age of change. Look at what Napster did to the music industry. With the advent of digital readers like the Kindle and the Sony reader, it's only a matter of time before the market shifts.

Diehards like me though will always buy the book for pleasure reading...it's part of the experience. One comment that I found particularly disturbing is the quote from the Sun Microsystems CEO He said something to the effect that it content will be or is secondary to the entertainment factor (i.e success will be determined by 'audience share')I think this has been happening for a long time in education. It seems that students have shorter and shorter attention spans and/or that content has to be presented in increasingly entertaining and 'soundbite' ways.
There is such a huge disconnect between all the content that we, meaning educators in Ontario, are supposed to be cramming down the throats of our students and the reality of the wired world outside the classroom.
On the other hand, do I mark myself as a dinosaur, if I think that even in this new world, there are many things that require effort and may not be 'fun' to learn, but in the end, if the student is patient enough, the ultimate payoff is worth the price?(Learning to play an instrument is one example that comes to mind.)The TTLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16276307003483277337noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10182544.post-53919067506677805112008-03-01T20:59:00.000-05:002008-03-01T20:59:00.000-05:00What's even more disturbing is seeing footage of p...What's even more disturbing is seeing footage of peasants in China, stripping these down (along with trashed computer components) in order to salvage metal and other components that they can sell for a pittance in order to eke out a meager existance. So here it is again...

First things first: You are not old.

I love teaching media studies. And yes, Lorna, I too have witnessed students altering photos. They have no qualms in doing so. A student today showed me the wonders of Adobe PhotoShop. Magazines "digitize" models' photos without a second thought. But do you remember the controversy that ensued after Time and Newsweek both had OJ Simpson on their covers and his skin colour was different in each one?

I think media literacy is a "must-teach" strand. In my experience, though, some teachers gloss over the media sections. Media is left to then end of a unit "if there's time." Our students need to explore media much more deeply. They film their lives and events around them and then post the finished products on You Tube. They don't think about the consequences of doing so (the message, as it were). Each medium has the power to both inform and persuade.

I find the Media Awareness Network to be an excellent source. The New York Times teacher resource section has many media ideas. Last year, there was a lesson about the celebrity milk ads that appear in many U.S. magazines.

Students too like studying media. I remember when I was teaching World War I, students were shocked to learn that the Canadian Government was altering photographs of the Front before they were put out for public consumption.
Thanks,
JulieJ Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02935890807920599873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10182544.post-62865959752434158072007-12-10T19:54:00.000-05:002007-12-10T19:54:00.000-05:00First things first: You are not old.I love teachin...First things first: You are not old.

I love teaching media studies. And yes, Lorna, I've witnessed students altering photos as well. They have no qualms about doing it. I think media literacy is a "must-teach" strand. Media is woven throughout the curriculum, but, in my experience, teachers often gloss over the strand. Media lessons are left at the end of a unit "if there's time". Students should explore media and its power. Any medium can inform and persuade. Kids film all sorts of things with cameras (fights, for example) and then post them on YouTube. They often don't think about the consequences (or the message itself).

The Media Awareness Network is an excellent source.
-JulieJ Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02935890807920599873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10182544.post-67314306554361398562007-12-09T15:14:00.000-05:002007-12-09T15:14:00.000-05:00Hi - I think someone has to teach Media Studies. ...Hi - I think someone has to teach Media Studies. Do "they" get it?

It would appear that Media is now as vast and deep as Technology is. I watched a student recently "doctor" a picture - and it still looked very real. He removed a window from the building and some trees out front and the end of the fencing. I wondered if he was able to apply critical thinking to the next media image - is it real? Has someone doctored it? Our youth are going to have to be astute critical thinkers with a vast framework of healthy scepticism for almost everything in their lives. It is almost sad somehow - can you trust anything? What IS real? (more to the point: IS anything real??)
LLorna Readshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06059734196935573596noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10182544.post-62731065769476313212007-12-08T16:18:00.000-05:002007-12-08T16:18:00.000-05:00Hey! Her daughter was the first one in a small settlement to go beyond grade 8 and complete Nurses College. I used to marvel at all the changes she had seen in her life. Literally - from horse and buggy and pioneers to flight and education and television. Some days I feel like I have switched places with her - technology is so deep and so vast and moves so quickly - wonder where the dust will settle for many of the Baby Boomers.
And isn't that becoming a cute and antiquated term?
LLorna Readshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06059734196935573596noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10182544.post-62951091813197545482007-11-24T11:32:00.000-05:002007-11-24T11:32:00.000-05:00What an awesome resource. Loved the message.

As librarian, I have felt for a long time now, that resources have no value (zero) (do they really exist?) if no one is using them. Thus, the old attitudes whereby one just wanted the books neatly on the shelf and if no one ever touched... that was preferrably to books used and abused and pages mussed and books lost or forgotten or misplaced or doodled in.
WEB 2.0 with the message that it is the sharing and the use of the information that gives it value. It only has meaning if someone is using or applying or synthesizing.
Evaluation.
So much to challenge our presumptions. Are any truths still held sacred?
